Zoe Playing with Funnel’s in a Fluid Acrylic Pour.

Both my younger kids James and Zoe love to make videos and love to watch YouTube.  After much deliberation we decided to go ahead and create a channel dedicate to kids making stuff and having fun teaching.  The above linked video is from their channel and I hope you will subscribe and give them a little love.  They are super excited!

My youngest Zoe has been wanting to try making a fluid acrylic pour using a funnel.  I have not ever done this so I told her it would be a great technique for her to learn.  Over the next series of videos, Zoe will be perfecting, testing and sharing what she learns.

Having an opportunity to set Zoe free and let her learn a technique based on her own experience is a gift.  I encourage everyone to be brave and try new things.  It is helpful to understand the basics, but there is a point where learning for yourself is more important.  It not only builds confidence, but it also builds tolerance and empathy for other.

In the video, I mixed all the paints for Zoe beforehand.  Each color uses a simple recipe that I have used many times before.  Below is a link to the ingredients and the recipe for each color:

Ingredients:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Teal
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Ultramarine Violet
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Phthalo Blue
  • Jacquard Lumiere – 555 Halo Pink Gold
  • 91% Rubbing Alcohol
  • Flood Floetrol
  • B’Laster Silicone Spray
  • Small 2 ounce funnel
  1. Mix carefully 1 part paint to 2 parts floetrol.  This needs to be well incorporated before adding any alcohol.
  2. Add 91% alcohol to the mix to thin the paint further.  This is a personal preference and is solely based on how YOU want the paint consistency.  You can substitute the alcohol for distilled water.  We use alcohol because it dries faster and reduces cracks.
  3. Just before the paint is used spray one shot of silicone in your paint mix and gently stir.

You can follow the video on how Zoe setup and poured in the funnel.

Acrylic Pouring Painting A Letter J for my boy James – Triple Cup Dirty Pour

Tonight my son James and I hung out and worked on his letter J.  The kids are all really excited about hanging their own artwork on their walls and I am thrilled I get to do it with them.   Just like the last two pours, we did a three cup pour for the letter J.  The difference with this pour was that we used all primary colors to get a ton of mixed colors.  The best part was changing up how much was in each cup to get more purples or oranges or greens.  James had a great time and the piece is going to look great when it dries.

For the recipe we did the following in each cup:

2 ounces Flood Floetrol
10 mls of alcohol
20 mls of paint

The paints were added to three separate cups and then poured over the canvas.  Very little was done to manipulate the panel.  Below is a list of the ingredients we used:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Hansa Yellow – http://amzn.to/2pQZuWd
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Napthaol Red – http://amzn.to/2pPtaUh
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Phthalo Blue ( Red Shade) – http://amzn.to/2qlEhr5

The Effect of a No Flip – Flip Cup Acrylic Pouring Technique

Lately, I have been working on the way to get a lot of paint on a large panel without actually pouring the paint. Mainly I wanted to do a flip cup in multiple places. Well, I think I have found the solution, and I wanted to share the technique.

In the video, I use biscuit cutters to pool the paint up and create the dirty pour. The difference is that I placed my lightest colors first in the cup so they would have a chance to move around. I think this will work best on a large panel, but we will have to see later. Once the painting has dried, I will post the finished piece here in this blog, so you know what the results. If you want to try this for yourself I have listed all the products used below:

Products Used:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Titan Buff  –  http://amzn.to/2qT6l23
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Iridescent Gold – http://amzn.to/2qTrYPH
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) – http://amzn.to/2pssDY5
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Cobalt Turquoise – http://amzn.to/2po6xoV

Teaching my 8 year old to paint using acrylic pouring medium and mixing colors is probably one of the most fun things I do each week.  She just loves to make the magic happen and I love to watch her learn new things.

This week we did a little 8 inch canvas using some metallic paints and jewel tones.  We like the results and decided to spray a little silicone on the painting at the end of the pour.  Cells were created instantly!  However, after the painted dried they were not as interesting as the ones that appeared naturally.  For the painting in the video and seen above we made a list of the materials used in case you wanted to try some of this out.

Shopping List:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Quinacridone Magenta
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Cobalt Turquois
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Ultramarine Violet
  • Golden High Flow Acrylic – Titanium White
  • Lumiere Halo Blue Green Gold
  • Golden GAC 800
  • Flood Floetrol
  • 91% Alcohol
  • Blaster Silicone Spray

Recipe:

  1. For the Paint colors (NOT WHITE) we used the following ratios – 1 Part Paint: 1 Part GAC 800: 1 Part Alcohol
  2. For the White we used about 60cc of Floetrol and 10 drops of White High Flow Acrylic.
  3. The paints were added to the cups and then poured over the canvas.  Some would call it a “dirty pour”
  4. After the paint had settled we then sprayed a very light mist of silicone over the painting allowing the chemical to settle on top and create the cellular reaction.

YT_27

This Sunday afternoon my youngest and I made a little artwork. She has been begging for me to make a YouTube video on my channel of her and I making art. So this afternoon we decided on a piece and started filming away.

The best part of working with my youngest is that she is open to trying new things. She also never holds back from telling me what she thinks. In this video, I was teaching her how to make a resin art piece and using a straw to manipulate the materials. Watching her try to blow through a straw on the resin was more than funny.

In the end, we had a blast, made some great art, and spent some quality time together. She is a pretty cool kid, and I think her art is top of the line!

HERE IS THE LINK TO THE VIDEO.

I have also been asked by some to include a list of materials used in the video. So below is a list of links to where you can purchase each item we used.

  1. Golden Fluid Acrylic Hansa Yellow Light
  2. Golden Fluid Acrylic Ultramarine Violet
  3. Golden Fluid Acrylic Teal
  4. Golden High Flow Acrylic Titanium White
  5. Golden High Flow Acrylic Pink
  6. Pro Marine Supply Epoxy Resin
  7. Fredrix 8″ Round Cut Canvas

Art Resin is another great resin to be used on paintings.

I was asked about using Floetrol as a pouring medium and was interested in doing some tests. After the testing and a great conversation with the guys at Flood regarding the science behind floetrol, I found it to be a pretty good alternative.

Without getting into too much detail in writing, I put together a video explaining what they told me and a sample pour with a recipe for using floetrol. I am going to give this a try on some larger pieces I have a commission as it seems to work just fine under resin.

Take a look at the video for a detailed explanation. There is a recipe in the description.

Some of the materials used with links:

  1. Flood Floetrol
  2. Silicone
  3. Art Resin
  4. Torch

Acrylic pouring on a budget

I was asked recently about the way in which I use pouring medium. Apparently, certain pouring mediums are hard to find, out of stock or just plain expensive. After doing a little more research, I came up with a weighted pouring solution that is much less costly and easier to obtain.

Pouring medium itself has some properties that reduce crazing, extend the fluid acrylic and are leveling. Unfortunately, this recipe of pouring medium does none of that, but for those that are cost conscious and want to try out colors without committing their more expensive mediums, this seems to be a pretty good alternative.

Basically, the recipe is medium bodied tube paint, water, 91% alcohol and Elmer’s glue. The measurements are by weight rather than volume, and each is equal. So its a pure 1 to 1 ration on all four ingredients.

So try it out and let me know what you think!
