A little purple acrylic pouring piece.

  • Under : Acrylic Pour , Resin

This was a little piece I am working on for a friend of mine.  It will be the background but the creation of this part is always exciting! Hope you enjoy!

Materials Used: Custom 8-inch wood panel (I make these myself)

Paints:
All Golden Fluid Acrylic
Titanium White – https://amzn.to/2JMLyHA
Iridescent Pearl Fine – https://amzn.to/2EM5Ayf
Dioxazine Purple – https://amzn.to/2ELTK7p
Quinacridone Violet – https://amzn.to/2H1DVj2

Pouring Medium:
Flotrol – https://amzn.to/2vjBYJm
GAC 800 – https://amzn.to/2HC9XyU
Alcohol – 91% – https://amzn.to/2EIuQWl

Dispersion Agent:
Cutting Board Oil – https://amzn.to/2JMkvwr

Resin Coating:
https://amzn.to/2ELEDe7

Mix your paints in separate cups. The colors are all tints, so they are set at a 1:1 ration with white.

1 part White to 1 part Pearl
1 part purple to 1 part white
1 part violet to 1 part white

Mixing the Fluid Medium

I add about three parts floetrol to 1 part GAC. Make sure to strain the floetrol, so there are no chunks. After the floetrol is strained mix it well then let it sit for about 30 minutes. This will eliminate any bubbles created by the mixing.

Putting it together:
Add your pouring medium to your paint. Keep in mind the floetrol, and gac dries translucent so the colors will look a little dull. This will change as it dries. Once you have the paints mixed, add a few drops of alcohol and mix well.

I mixed these colors in a “dirty cup.” As I added paint, I dropped in 1 drop of oil to help disperse the paints.

Pour it on and let it go. Let the paint dry for a couple of days. Then you can add any coating you like. I added resin as a top coat.

Thanks for watching.

Kid Safe and fun Almost Acrylic Tempera Fluid Painting

I have been asked a few times about using Tempera paint as a substitute for acrylic pouring.  As far as I can recall I had a grandmother asking if it was possible to use this type of paint so she could show her grandchildren.  First I have to say it is awesome showing kids how to make brave art.  Children have no interest in selling their art and do this for themselves and not for “Likes.”  In some ways, it is much like intuitive painting.  If only we could all go through life with childlike faith, childlike curiosity and childlike love.

Since this is really for kids and not intended to be archival, I used tempura paints and regular school glue.  Both are washable and safe to handle.  Tempera paint is not much different from acrylic except it uses calcium carbonate as a binder and does not dry into plastic.  Calcium Carbonate is pretty much found in eggs, snail shells and various other organic minerals.  It is sometimes referred to as Egg Tempera and was used long before acrylics.  There are some permanent tempera paints, but I am using a student grade tempera from Chroma.  Chroma has a bunch of different types and recently came out with a Kids Chroma Tempera specifically for schools and kids.

What I found is that these act similar to the craft style paints.  Of course, the school glue is thicker and does not have a long-term archival property, but again, this is for fun and not for sale.  Based on the number of different types of tempera paints available I am sure you could get different results, but I hope you give this a try with a little one in your life!  So get your kids, get your paints and get your wet towels because this is tons of fun!

Here is the recipe I used.  (Please note, this is not exact, and I encourage you to experiment beyond just a recipe).

  • 1 part Paint
  • 1 part School Glue
  • A splash of alcohol
  • A splash of water

The alcohol will help with making cells and the water will help thin everything down some.  Once you get it the right constancy your can do a swipe, pour whatever you like.  Keep in mind, the Chroma Tempera paints actually use pigment so specific gravity does make a difference.

Here are the products that were used:

Trying New Things with Acrylic Pouring and isolating colors.

At times I will be thinking of something regarding technique.  The other day I was playing with some water color paints and had an idea about layering colors with cookie cutters.  Now I have done this in a video of which is linked below, but this time I was thinking more along the lines of using cookie cutters to create cells of cells.  Or clusters of cells.   While the idea worked somewhat, I was not super happy with the colors.  I could see this being utilized more on a huge piece, which I may try soon.  Either way, the process fun and I always learn something even if I didn’t like the end results. Below is more information about the recipe and the paints I used.

Here are the paints that I used along with the other additives.   To see the original video of the “No flip cup flip cup” please click here: https://youtu.be/act_BluG7tk

For the recipe I pretty much stuck the recipe in the video linked here.  http://dannyclarkart.net/another-alternative-to-pouring-medium/

Fluid Acrylic Pouring with Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics

In this video, I use Liquitex Soft Body Acrylics. These acrylics are smooth but not as fluid as Golden Fluid Acrylics. In each of the colors, I also added some Liquitex Basic Iridescent Medium. I was hoping there would be more effect in the final result, but this was not the case. I think it is better to use an iridescent paint to get the true effect.

Overall the paints were responsive and held up nicely when drying. The colors stayed fairly true. I think if I were forced to use these, I wouldn’t have a problem but overall I am not overly impressed to change from any other brand I may be using.

The pieces in the video are available for sale on my Etsy page. Please feel free to visit and find something that will support the YouTube channel.

In the video I used the following materials:

  • Liquitex Professional Soft Body Acrylic Paint 2-oz jar, Mars Black – http://amzn.to/2svVVtB

Acrylic Pouring Painting A Letter J for my boy James – Triple Cup Dirty Pour
  • Posted By : admin/

Tonight my son James and I hung out and worked on his letter J.  The kids are all really excited about hanging their own artwork on their walls and I am thrilled I get to do it with them.   Just like the last two pours, we did a three cup pour for the letter J.  The difference with this pour was that we used all primary colors to get a ton of mixed colors.  The best part was changing up how much was in each cup to get more purples or oranges or greens.  James had a great time and the piece is going to look great when it dries.

For the recipe we did the following in each cup:

2 ounces Flood Floetrol
10 mls of alcohol
20 mls of paint

The paints were added to three separate cups and then poured over the canvas.  Very little was done to manipulate the panel.  Below is a list of the ingredients we used:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Hansa Yellow – http://amzn.to/2pQZuWd
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Napthaol Red – http://amzn.to/2pPtaUh
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Phthalo Blue ( Red Shade) – http://amzn.to/2qlEhr5

Creating Cells and Memories – Acrylic Pouring Using Cookie Cutters

I don't get to spend a lot of time with my oldest but when I do we generally do a lot of laughing.  Whitney is one of my greatest accomplishments and I am always in awe of what she can do.  This kid works hard in school, she raises animals in FFA, sings in the choir at church and tutors 5th graders every Wednesday.  She is also an awesome photographer and cook!  Last night her and I spent a little time together trying out the new technique and we had a lot of fun.

The painting dried beautifully and we are excited about the results.

The Effect of a No Flip – Flip Cup Acrylic Pouring Technique
  • Posted By : admin/

  • Under : acrylic , Acrylic Pour , Video , Youtube

Lately, I have been working on the way to get a lot of paint on a large panel without actually pouring the paint. Mainly I wanted to do a flip cup in multiple places. Well, I think I have found the solution, and I wanted to share the technique.

In the video, I use biscuit cutters to pool the paint up and create the dirty pour. The difference is that I placed my lightest colors first in the cup so they would have a chance to move around. I think this will work best on a large panel, but we will have to see later. Once the painting has dried, I will post the finished piece here in this blog, so you know what the results. If you want to try this for yourself I have listed all the products used below:

Products Used:

  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Titan Buff  –  http://amzn.to/2qT6l23
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Iridescent Gold – http://amzn.to/2qTrYPH
  • Golden Fluid Acrylic – Phthalo Blue (Red Shade) – http://amzn.to/2pssDY5
